Woman behind bars

parterre boxAt the end of July the Caramoor Festival will present Fidelio, one of my favorite operas and one which has been absent from the Met for over a decade (although it returns next spring.) “Trove Thursday” over the next weeks presents two works deeply connected to Beethoven’s moving masterpiece: first, Ferdinando Paër’s 1804 Leonora ossia L’Amore coniugale conducted by its great champion Peter Maag and featuring Ursula Koszut, Krisztina Laki and Renzo Casellato. Paër (1771-1839) was an extremely prolific composer whose 55 (!) operas premiered all over Europe, but he’s known (if at all) primarily for his Fidelio precursor Leonora, a dramma semiseria which premiered in Dresden where he was composer-in-residence for several years. Leonora was in turn was based on Pierre Gaveaux’s 1798 Léonore ou L’Amour conjugal, one of a number of popular French “rescue operas” in vogue at the time, the best-known being Cherubini’s Lodoïska and Les Deux Journées. While he was in Dresden, Paër encountered Napoleon who admired his music greatly and who brought him to Paris where he become conductor of the Théâtre-Italien in 1812 succeeding Spontini. He held the post there for over a decade until he retired and Rossini took his place. Koszut’s career was centered in Stuttgart where her repertoire included dramatic coloratura roles like the Queen of the Night and Konstanze, Paër’s Leonora became a bit of a speciality; in addition to this RAI performance, the Polish soprano also recorded the opera for Decca with Maag who led the work regularly during the 70s and early 80s. The commercial recording features Siegfried Jerusalem as Florestano and a pre-Miss Havisham Edita Gruberová as Marcellina. I prefer this version over the Decca because of the Marcellina of Laki, a lovely Hungarian soprano who made a number of recordings with conductor Sigiswald Kuijken that I admire greatly, including a delightful Die Schöpfung and Partenope in which Laki’s sparkling Queen of Naples remains one of my favorite Handel portrayals ever. Those familiar with Beethoven’s version may be startled to discover that in Leonora Florestano, Pizarro and Fernando are all tenors! Paër’s opera is occasionally still revived: a 2000 production in Winterthur starred a young Jonas Kaufmann as Florestano and it provided one of our earliest examples of his singing. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0ajPznROL4 Paër: LEONORA ossia L’amore coniugale Milano, RAI 20 May 1979 Broadcast Leonora: Ursula Koszut Marcellina: Krisztina Laki Florestano: Renzo Casellato Pizarro: Tullio Pane Fernando: Ezio Di Cesare Rocco: Giorgio Tadeo Giacchino: Giancarlo Luccardi Conductor: Peter Maag Another Fidelio-related opera will arrive in two weeks, but in the meantime “Trove Thursday” offerings can be downloaded via the audio-player above. Just click on the icon of a square with an arrow pointing downward and the resulting mp3 file will appear in your download directory. In addition, Leonora, last week’s Bolshoi Onegin and all previous fare remain available from iTunes or via any RSS reader.

Plate spinning

In January “Trove Thursday” took a break from longer full-length offerings and served up a trio of “small plates”: Elina Garanca, Jonas Kaufmann and Anu Komsi singing Berio, Mahler and Sibelius. Another edition arrives this week with Genia Kühmeier, Christian Gerhaher and Phyllis Bryn-Julson performing works by Richard Strauss, Mahler and Berg. It’s been nearly nine years since Kühmeier’s Met debut as a radiant Pamina, one of the best I’ve ever heard. Sadly she hasn’t returned to the Met nor sung much opera in recent years due to the severe illness of her husband who died two years ago. The Austrian soprano has made relatively few recordings but she does occasionally appear in concert and this live Vier Letzte Lieder from 2014 provides a glimpse of her artistry. (That my beloved maternal grandmother’s middle name was Genia—and most people called her that—might partly explain why I’m pre-disposed to admire the lovely Kühmeier.) Two years ago baritone Gerhaher appeared as the distant, grave Jesus in Peter Sellars’s chic and high-priced Berlin Philharmonic production of Bach’s Matthäus-Passion at the Park Avenue Armory. In recent seasons he has sung more and more opera, roles ranging from Wagner’s Wolfram and Pelléas to Wozzeck and Monteverdi’s Orfeo. Unfortunately he has yet to sing opera in the U.S. where he remains known as an acclaimed recitalist and concert singer. His Mahler performances are particularly striking as one may experience in this version of the Rücker-Lieder from last year conducted by Bernard Haitink. Now retired, American soprano Bryn-Julson was best known for her fierce advocacy of 20th century vocal music. Mostly a concert singer, she did occasionally appear in opera; for example, she was Malinche in Sarah Caldwell’s U.S. premiere of Session’s Montezuma in 1976. A favorite of Michael Gielen’s during his tenure at the Cincinnati Symphony. I heard them collaborate in 1984 in Schoenberg’s Erwartung. However, I missed this performance two years later of Berg’s lush concert-aria Der Wein which shows off her insouciant confidence in the most demanding music. Did she ever sing Lulu complete? Montag mit Marguerite

Berlioz apparently couldn’t decide if his was an oratorio or an opera, so he labeled it a “légende dramatique.” Since its 1846 Paris premiere, it remains on both opera stages and in concert halls, with its first Met staging in 1906. I as well had difficulty deciding which performance to post this week. I have two broadcasts with Jonas Kaufmann as Faust from 2002 and from 2015. Ultimately, it was Susan Graham’s Marguerite that led me to choose the 2002 performance, which also offers the opportunity to hear Kaufmann at age 32, a number of years before his rise to international superstardom. Ever since I heard Shirley Verrett’s “D’amour l’ardente flame” on an old RCA LP in the 1960s, the aria has been one of my favorites, and I found myself unable to get it out of my heard in the last week while preparing this upload. I listened to Graham’s painfully gorgeous rendition it at least 20 times. For personal and geographical reasons, I missed out on much of her career, and am now looking forward to catching up. Of course, it is interesting to hear the difference between 2002 Kaufmann and 2016 Kaufmann. I will leave you to analyze the transition in his vocal production. A special treat is the Méphistophélès of José van Dam, one of the greatest vocal interpreters of out time. I was lucky to have heard him many times from his Met debut as Escamillo and unforgettable performances there as Golaud (a role which he “owned” for 30 years), and as recently as 2008 when he jumped in on a few days’ notice for an ailing Michael Schade and sang a breathtaking Liederabend at Theater an der Wien, highlighted by Schuman’s Dichterliebe, in absolutely resplendent voice at 67. Antonio Pappano is no slouch on the podium, and makes a strong case for the work. While it may suffer from an identity crisis, La damnation de Faust shows Berlioz at his innovative and eccentric best.
